Synopsis

When a derelict factory affords the perfect cover to a dodgy business proposition, the immediate problem facing Zacharia H. a Polish immigrant, is a question of what's to be done with his ten year-old son, Milos, now that the lad's mother has fled back to Poland under a cloud? The scam at first proves fertile, and Milos genuinely believes the father's absence at night is for the purpose of finding work. So Milos passes the lonely nights in the factory conjuring delightfully witty portrayals written in letters to his mother, of a comfortably affluent existence in Middle England. During the day, father and son past the time playing Noughts and Crosses - a game of chance - sharing a Code of Silence so as not to draw needless attention to them. Then Milos falls under the spell of a mysterious stranger whose fate appears to mirror that of his own! And with the arrival of Uncle Victor, an entrepreneur from Poland, it's not long before the truth of the father's exploits are revealed.
